Outsmarting the most common military injury: how one Veteran is helping future generations

Serving in the U.S. Army for 26 years, Retired Col. John Dillard is Hearing Health Foundation’s (HHF) Board Chair. He is also someone who lives with tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss. Because he is responsible for tinnitus consumer review for the Peer Review Medical Research Program (PRMRP), Dillard is also somebody who makes decisions regarding the evaluation and scoring of tinnitus research proposals based on their potential both scientifically and clinically.

In light of the fact that there currently is not a cure for tinnitus, Dillard says, "We know now that tinnitus is more of a ‘brain problem’ that usually starts from damage to the ear in the form of noise-induced hearing loss…I am hopeful that we will see progress on the treating of tinnitus in our lifetimes."
