Student pushes for authentic representation of deaf community

By Lisa Renner, UCSC News Center
summarized by Rachel Cain, Staff Writer

19-year-old Chrissy Marshall uses her YouTube channel, "The Essential Sign," to communicate to her more than 1,000 subscribers about the lives of people with hearing loss. Marshall herself was born severely hard of hearing and then became deaf while in high school. Now a film and digital media student at UC Santa Cruz, she makes videos in ASL about Deaf culture and life as a person with hearing loss.

"Spreading awareness and educating people about deafness and accessibility is a passion of mine that I have found truly rewarding," Marshall says.

The videos also include captions and voice-overs.
