Better Hearing is Being Made More Convenient

The stigma regarding hearing aids prevents many people with hearing loss from seeking help. Whether a person feels the hearing loss isn’t bad enough to warrant a doctor’s visit or feels that dealing with doctors just isn’t worth the time, many people continue living with untreated hearing loss.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has created an app that addresses this unwillingness to see hearing professionals. ACEHearing has the ability to test an individuals hearing, with accuracy comparable to a hearing test performed by an audiologist. The smartphone can then adjust itself to the hearing level of its user, producing sound frequencies at an optimal level for that user.

Developers of the app hope for it to be available commercially in 2012, and hope to see the technology span not just smartphones, but any sound-producing device.
